Recreational (Rec) Soccer Overview

Recreational (Rec) Soccer is designed for players interested in learning basic soccer skills and participating in games. It generally involves less commitment (e.g., fewer practices) than Travel or Premier Soccer.

Key Dates and Information:

Fall: Games and practices begin in August.

Spring: Games and practices begin in April.

Rosters and Game Schedules: These are posted under Team Central and can be accessed through My Account when logged in to mentorsoccerclub.com as well as the Game Changer application.

Divisions:

Most U8 and older Co-ed divisions are boys. However, girls can participate in any Co-ed division. We will try to balance the teams to provide a comfortable learning environment for all players.

Players may play up two age groups (e.g., a U10 player can play in the U12 division). To do so, you must register in your correct birth year and then email registrar@mentorsoccerclub.com to request a transfer to the older division.

Payment:

Payment for Rec Soccer covers both the Fall and Spring seasons if paid in the Fall. Players will remain with the same team for both seasons.

Team Formation:

MSC’s primary goal is to form fair and balanced teams. Since there are no tryouts for Rec Soccer, players are placed on teams without prior knowledge of their skill levels.

Note: Mentor Soccer Club reserves the right to combine divisions, birth years, and genders if necessary, based on the number of participants.

Rec Coaches:

Rec Soccer coaches are selected from MSC’s membership, with volunteers including parents and family members. All volunteer coaches must have a Concussion Certification and complete Lindsay’s Law training.

All Rec teams require a parent coach volunteer. Because of the affordable cost of Rec Soccer, we do not provide coaches. Coaches are not required to have soccer knowledge.

Refunds: Refunds are not provided if a parent does not volunteer to coach.

Practices:

Team practices should begin two weeks before the start of the season. Coaches may also schedule additional practices during the season.

Games:

Rec Soccer games, including make-up games, are scheduled on weeknights and Saturdays at various fields in the City of Mentor.

MSC’s policy is that each player should play at least 50% of the game time. However, players may choose not to play if they decline when asked by the coach.

Tournaments:

Rec teams generally do not participate in tournaments. Any tournament participation will be at the discretion of the coach and parents, with participating families responsible for any associated costs.

Volunteers:

Mentor Soccer Club is a volunteer-based, not-for-profit organization, and we always need help from our members. If we do not get enough volunteers, the club may have to hire staff, which could significantly increase fees.
